There is a reasonable chance you have never connected your underwear drawer to the state of the ocean. Most people have not. But the synthetic fabrics that make up the majority of men's underwear sold today are a direct and largely unacknowledged contributor to one of the most significant environmental crises of our time. Microplastic pollution is reshaping marine ecosystems and your laundry is part of the story.
What Are Microplastics
Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than five millimetres in size. They enter the environment through a variety of routes including the breakdown of larger plastic items, industrial discharge and the shedding of synthetic textiles during washing and wearing. Once in the environment they are extraordinarily difficult to remove and they accumulate in water, soil, air and living organisms.
The problem with microplastics is not just their presence but their persistence. Plastic does not biodegrade in any meaningful timeframe. It breaks down into smaller and smaller particles, each carrying chemical additives from the original manufacturing process, and those particles work their way through ecosystems in ways we are only beginning to understand.
How Synthetic Underwear Sheds Microplastics
Synthetic fabrics including polyester, nylon and elastane are, at a fundamental level, plastic. They are made from petroleum derived polymers formed into fibres and woven into fabric. Every time a synthetic garment is washed, those fibres shed. Research from the University of Plymouth found that a single wash of a synthetic garment can release more than 700,000 microplastic fibres into the water supply.
Standard domestic washing machines are not equipped to filter particles this small. The fibres pass through wastewater treatment systems, many of which also lack the filtration capacity to capture them at this scale, and enter rivers, lakes and ultimately the ocean.
A pair of synthetic underwear is washed frequently, often more than most garments. Over the course of its lifespan a single pair of polyester blend boxers will shed millions of microplastic fibres into the water system. Multiply that across the volume of synthetic underwear sold globally each year and the scale of the contribution becomes significant.
The Scale of the Problem
Microplastic pollution in the ocean is not a future concern. It is a present reality. Research published in Scientific Reports estimated that there are more than 14 million tonnes of microplastic on the ocean floor alone. The ocean surface, water column and marine sediments all contain significant concentrations of microplastic particles.
A study published in Nature Communications found microplastics in the deepest parts of the ocean including the Mariana Trench, more than 10 kilometres below the surface. There is no part of the marine environment that has not been reached by plastic pollution.
Textile shedding is consistently identified as one of the leading sources of ocean microplastics. Research from the International Union for Conservation of Nature estimated that synthetic textiles account for around 35% of the microplastics entering the ocean globally, making it the single largest identified source.
What Microplastics Do to Marine Life
The impact on marine ecosystems is wide ranging and serious. Microplastic particles are ingested by marine organisms at every level of the food chain, from zooplankton to fish to seabirds to marine mammals. Once ingested they can cause physical blockages, reduce feeding and reproductive capacity and transfer chemical pollutants into the tissue of the organism.
Research published in Environmental Science and Technology found that fish exposed to microplastics showed altered behaviour, reduced growth rates and impaired reproduction. Studies on marine invertebrates have found similar effects, with microplastic ingestion linked to reduced filter feeding efficiency and increased mortality rates.
The chemical dimension compounds the problem. Microplastic particles act as vectors for persistent organic pollutants, absorbing and concentrating toxic chemicals from the surrounding water and delivering them in concentrated form to whatever organism ingests them. This process, known as bioaccumulation, means that the chemical burden increases as you move up the food chain.
Microplastics Are Now in Human Bodies
What enters the ocean does not stay there. Microplastics have now been detected in human blood, lung tissue, placental tissue and most recently in testicular samples. A 2023 study published in Science of the Total Environment found microplastic particles in every human testicular sample examined, raising serious questions about the long term implications for male reproductive health and fertility.
We eat seafood that has ingested microplastics. We drink water that contains them. We breathe air that carries them. The fibres shed from synthetic clothing are part of a cycle that begins in your washing machine and ends, in some form, back in the human body.
The Simple Maths of Cotton
100% cotton is not plastic. It does not shed synthetic polymer fibres when washed. Cotton fibres that do shed during washing are natural cellulose based materials that biodegrade in the environment rather than accumulating indefinitely. Choosing cotton underwear does not solve the microplastic crisis but it removes one consistent and entirely avoidable source of synthetic fibre pollution from your daily routine.
The average man gets through multiple pairs of underwear a year. Over a lifetime that represents a significant volume of fabric going through the wash cycle repeatedly. The difference between those garments being synthetic and being 100% cotton is the difference between contributing to the problem and opting out of it.
A Small Change With a Real Impact
Environmental problems at the scale of ocean microplastic pollution can feel overwhelming and individual action can feel futile. But the textile industry is a major contributor to this crisis and consumer choices shape what the textile industry produces. Demand for natural fibres over synthetic ones is a meaningful signal and a meaningful act.
Switching to 100% cotton underwear will not clean the ocean. But it will mean that every time you do your laundry you are not adding to the problem. For something as simple and everyday as underwear, that feels like a choice worth making.
Less plastic in your pants means less plastic in the ocean. It really is that straightforward.
